Individual Counseling
Individual counseling is available for students in helping with their personal, social, and academic needs. Students can be self-referred, by teachers, or by parents. Counseling is a service of the school and, therefore, offered to all students.
My goals in individual counseling are to work with students' strengths to develop skills and empower them to create and implement their own goals, to collaborate with parents and teachers to address their concerns and make positive changes, and to refer to community resources when it is in the best interest of the child and family.
School counselors need to at times use their own discretion in this area, or simply abide by school policies, state law or federal law. For example, if it appears a particular student has suicidal tendencies, the counselor is required by law to notify authorities.
